AdWords Tips - Geographic Optimization

If you're looking for ways to improve the performance of your Google AdWords account, Geographic optimization is a great place to start.

Google makes it possible to monitor your performance by State, City and Metro. Adjusting your campaigns to maximize delivery in the geographic regions that perform best for you, and minimize or eliminate delivery in the regions that perform poorly, is a quick way to improve your overall performance.

The first step to Geographic optimization is running a geographic report. In the AdWords UI, you must first activate the Dimensions tab. At the far right end of the reporting tabs is located a selection arrow:

This selection arrow will expand a selection box, with an option to show the Dimensions tab:

With the dimensions tab activated and selected, you can now change the View to Geographic:

Now, you have access to all of your performance data by state, metro and city:

Your next step is to apply this data through geographic targeting. You may want to create new specifically targeted campaigns for your top geographic regions, or for regions that you'd like to improve your performance in. You may also want to exclude regions that perform poorly for you, and certainly regions that you don't offer your products or services to.

After you have adjusted your campaigns to optimize your geographic targeting, your AdWords performance will be much more efficient. With regular monitoring of your geographic performance and ongoing optimizations, you will continue to maximize your return on investment.
